Ash and co. are still continuing their way towards Hearthome City. They stop for a break, and Brock pulls out a map. Brock shows Ash the location of Hearthome City. Ash is excited that it will only take a few more days until they arrive. Ash can't wait to battle the gym leader, and Dawn can't wait to win her second ribbon. Ash and co. pack things up, and they head onto the road again. Suddenly, a girl appears and mentions a shortcut to Hearthome City. Ash and co. are pleased to hear about it because it will make their journey quicker. The girl introduces herself as Mira, and then Ash and co. introduce themselves to her. Mira sends out her Abra, and Dawn looks it up in her Pokédex. Ash wants to know what Abra has to do with the shortcut. Mira explains that Abra can teleport everyone to Hearthome City. Ash and co. are amazed at Abra's ability. So everyone holds onto Abra, and Mira commands her Abra to teleport.

Ash and co. arrive at a place, but it is not Hearthome City. They arrive on a bridge. Mira explains to Ash and co. that she teleported them to a different location because she needs their help to find her grandmother's pendant that is somewhere in the lake below. Dawn suggests that Abra uses its power to retrieve the pendant. Mira explains that Abra cannot teleport underwater, which leads to a problem. Ash and co. volunteer to help Mira find her missing pendant. Mira is relieved. She tells Dawn that her Piplup and Buizel can help, too. Dawn wonders how Mira knows about them, and Mira tells her that she saw them back in the forest. Brock wonders how they are going to search the whole lake because it is huge. Mira gives eveyrone a device that allows them to breath underwater. She wants everyone to help. Then Ash and co. dives deep into the water.

They notice an entire city deep below the surface. Suddenly, a Gyarados leaps out from one of the buildings and attacks Ash and co. Dawn has Piplup and Buizel attack Gyarados, but Gyarados dodges their attacks and counters with Hyper Beam. Then Gyarados fires up a twister and launches it at Ash and co. Ash and co. are thrown out of the water. They decide to take a rest on land. Dawn knows that Mira had known about that Gyarados. Mira confesses, but she didn't tell Ash and co. about it because they might have been scared to come with her. Brock wants to know what else Mira is hiding. Mira already narrowed their search to such a small area, so Brock wonders what she needs them for. Mira explains that she made up the entire pendant story. She explains that the building that Gyarados jumped out from was her school. Mira tells a story about how she found a Pokéball years ago with a Pokémon already inside. Her and her two best friends decided to raise it together. Unfortunately, the town government declared that a dam would be built, leaving the entire town underwater. When that happened, her two friends moved away. She doesn't know where the Pokéball is, but she has a good feeling that it is in the school. However, the Gyarados always chases her away when she gets close to it.

Ash and co. understand now why Mira needs their help. Mira didn't admit to it at the beginning because that would make her feel bad as a Pokémon trainer. Dawn wonders what kind of Pokémon is in the Pokéball. Mira tells her that it's a Sandshrew, however Sandshrew are weak to the water, so it may get hurt. Ash and co. agree to help Mira, but they first need a strategy to get past the Gyarados. Brock has already thought of a strategy that will work.

Ash and co. dive deep into the water again. When they get close to the school, Gyarados attacks them. Dawn orders Buizel to use Aqua Jet; the attack his Gyarados head on. Then Piplup uses Bubblebeam, but Gyarados protects itself from it. Buizel launches a Sonicboom attack which hits Gyarados. Gyarados falls to the ground, but it manages to get back up. It begins to chase Piplup and Buizel towards the surface of the water. At the surface of the water is Ash and Pikachu. Pikachu senses Gyarados coming. Piplup and Buizel jump out of the water with Gyarados behind them. While Gyarados is in the air, Pikachu uses its Thunderbolt attack on Gyarados. Gyarados receives the electric shock. Knocked out, Gyarados falls back underwater. With Gyarados gone, Ash and co. dive deep into the water again, and they make it into the school. Mira leads the way to Sandshrew's location.

Suddenly, Team Rocket blasts through the school's wall in their Sharpedo jet ski. They fire a torpedo at Ash and co., causing an explosion. A net is fired towards Abra. Mira clings onto her Abra, and her and Abra get captured. Then Team Rocket makes their escape. Piplup and Buizel go after Team Rocket. Meowth presses a button, and three more torpedoes get fired at the two Pokémon. They get hit and fall back. Team Rocket is able to make their escape. Team Rocket makes it back on land, and they have Abra and Mira tied up in a net. Mira tells Team Rocket that she is their number one fan. Team Rocket is glad to hear it. Mira asks what she can do to become a Team Rocket member. James explains that she has to first go to Team Rocket training school. Mira tells her Abra to teleport away. Abra does, and they vanish. Team Rocket is mad that they have been tricked.

Mira and Abra appear back at the base, and her and Ash and co. decide to head back into the school. Mira finds a locker and opens it. Inside is the Pokéball that contains Sandshrew. Now that they have found Sandshrew, they head back onto land. Mira sincerely thanks Ash and co. for helping her find Sandshrew. She then opens up the Pokéball and Sandshrew appears. Mira greets Sandshrew and apologizes to it. Sandshrew immediately recognizes Mira and is glad. Brock notices that Sandshrew is still in great health. Dawn looks up Sandshrew in her Pokédex. Suddenly, a net lands on Abra, and Abra gets pulled up to Team Rocket's balloon. Team Rocket then says their motto. Mira demands that Team Rocket brings back Abra, but Team Rocket refuses to do so. So, Mira orders Abra to use Teleport. Abra uses the attack, but it doesn't work. Meowth explains that the net blocks any Psychic attack. Ash sends out Turtwig. It uses Razor Leaf to cut the net, and then Abra is able to successfully Teleport back to Mira. Team Rocket isn't finished yet. They send out Dustox and Cacnea. Dustox uses Poison Sting, and Cacnea uses Pin Missile. Turtwig dodges the attacks and uses Razor Leaf. Team Rocket's Pokémon gets knocked to the ground. Sandshrew tells Mira that it wants to battle, too. So, Sandshrew uses Slash, and Turtwig uses Tackle. Then Sandshrew whips up a Sandstorm to send Dustox and Cacnea back at Team Rocket. Finally, Pikachu fires a Thunderbolt at Team Rocket, and Team Rocket blasts off again.

With Team Rocket gone, Mira offers to take Ash and co. to Hearthome City. Abra teleports them all the way there. The city is now only a few blocks away thanks to Mira. Mira wishes Ash and Dawn the best of luck in their next challenges. Now that they have arrived at Hearthome City, Ash and Dawn can't wait to begin gym battles and contests.
