Ash, Misty, and Brock are continuing their journey to Mt. Silver, where they hope to deliver Larvitar back to its mother and then it’s off to the Johto League Silver Conference for Ash. Larvitar rides in Ash’s backpack as the three friends continue to journey. The little Pokémon looks up to the sky and notices a great purple portal. Everyone looks up to see an Unown fall from it and smack Misty in the head.

Misty falls over and hits the ground as Togepi lands on its feet. The Spike Ball Pokémon walks over to the Unown to investigate while Ash pulls out his Pokédex and scans it. The portal disappears from the sky as Ash picks up Unown and discovers that it is hot. Misty says that it is sick and is upset about being separated from its friends. Brock asks her how she knew that, so she states that she sort of read its mind and could feel something when it hit her. Misty then goes into describing something that she saw when Unown hit her; she calls it fluffy, hazy, squishy, mushy, fuzzy, and “wow-wow!” Brock says quietly to Ash that she got hit hard as Misty says that it was like a wonderland: the universe of the Unown.

A little later on, the gang has set up camp in the canyon. Unown lays with some blankets and a cloth on its head as Pikachu, Larvitar, and Togepi watch over it. Ash wishes for a Pokémon Center, Misty states that a little rest will do it some good, and Brock says that it’ll feel better once its fever is gone. The cloth falls off of Unown’s head and Larvitar kindly replaces it. Unown opens its eyes and thanks Larvitar before going back to sleep. Later that night, as the gang sits around the campfire, Brock says that there is a legend about the Unown that says that Unown are able to telepathically communicate with humans. Ash asks what telepathically means; Brock says telepathic is having to do with the mind. Ash announces that they are going to find Unown’s friends; Brock tells him that it’s easier said than done.

Unown wakes up and Ash tells it not to worry and promises that they will find its friends. Unown lays back down and Larvitar covers it again and puts the cloth back on its forehead. Meanwhile, Team Rocket spies on the scene. They plot to steal Unown for bargains. The next morning, Larvitar wakes Ash up bright and early to tell him that Unown is feeling better as the Pokémon floats around joyously. Misty tells Larvitar that it did a good job, but it Hardens. Unown brings it out of its Hardened state and the two begin to play together.

At the top of a cliff, Team Rocket groggily appears and starts their motto. They wake up gradually as they go on. They announce that they are there for Unown; Larvitar moves in front of it and puts its arms out, blocking them. At Ash’s command, Larvitar fires off a Hidden Power attack and Jessie orders a Counter from Wobbuffet. The attack turns around and aims for Larvitar. Just as it is about to hit, Unown’s body glows. The glow expands and the Countered Hidden Power collides with it. The result is a huge explosion. Team Rocket blasts off again and, as the smoke clears, Ash and friends are gone too…

Ash awakes to find himself on top of half of an eggshell and floating in the middle of a strange place. Half-eggs that look like Larvitar’s egg float everywhere and the background is green. Misty and Brock float over on eggs of their own as they notice that Pikachu and Togepi are gone. Brock says that they must be in another dimension and that when Wobbuffet’s Counter was about to hit, Unown’s body began to glow. A loud rumble sounds and everyone looks to see a shadow coming closer. As it gets nearer and nearer, Ash realizes that it is Pikachu. Togepi also appears and is also giant. Not realizing this, Togepi leaps for Misty; every screams and Pikachu catches Togepi with its tail.

Everyone then realizes that Larvitar is missing. A few minutes later, Ash and Brock ride on Pikachu while Misty rides on Togepi as they explore the strange world. Suddenly, the top of Elekid heads spring up from the ground and grab Pikachu and Togepi, lifting them high into the air. The background changes to Elekid coloring as the Electabuzz Theme Song plays mysteriously. The tops of Elekid heads appear all around them as flames come in and surround everyone. Ash and Brock start to scream but then realize that they aren’t hot. A small window appears in the air and a Magby pops its head into it. And then, the scene changes again to the green background again as Shellder float through the sky. These Shellder are the ones that are on top of a Slowking’s head, as Brock points out. Ash suddenly realizes that all of the places that they are going are themed with Pokémon they’ve seen recently: Elekid, Magby, and Slowking. A giant Slowking appears and Ash and friends float into its mouth, Pokémon and all.

Who's That Pokémon?

They appear back at where they started with the half-Larvitar eggs. They notice a full egg and walk over to investigate it. Ash looks through one of the cracks and sees himself walking along the path and looking at his backpack, undoubtedly which has Larvitar in it. Brock and Misty look through holes in the egg and see themselves too… but in black and white. The Misty in the egg gets closer to the screen and the picture freezes. They then realize that it is how Larvitar sees them and that it’s out of Larvitar’s memory. Brock then realizes something and explains to Ash and Misty that it’s not an Unown dimension but instead it’s Larvitar’s mind and when Unown glowed, it merged minds with Larvitar. Ash then states that that is why they can’t find Larvitar or Unown. He reaches for the thorn in the egg to pull it out and gets sucked in. Misty and Brock try to pull him out but get sucked in themselves. Pikachu and Togepi jump in too.

Pikachu and Togepi fall from the sky; Pikachu lands hard on the ground and Togepi bounces off of it, landing nicely. Ash and Misty pick up their Pokémon, who have returned to normal size. Suddenly, a giant shadowed machine appears in front of them and several thorn-like vines pop up to block them. They hear a voice that sounds familiar as three men appear on the other side of the thorn. They, too, are black and white and are another vision of Larvitar’s memory. The machine grabs an egg and the leader gets a hold of it. A Tyranitar appears and roars at the men as they attack it. The attacks leave a scar on its chest as it roars again. The men then take the egg away and leave the Tyranitar in its pain. Brock states that Larvitar is afraid of humans because of its awful separation from its mother.

Larvitar then appears, curled up a ball and surrounded by a blue light; Ash, Misty, and Brock rush over to it but before they get there, the thorn-vines appear again in front of them. They surround Larvitar and lift it higher. Larvitar begins to struggle in the thorns, trapped in its own memories as Brock puts it. Brock continues that the thorn on the egg represented Larvitar’s awful memories and that it is petrified of the outside world and has zero trust in humans. Ash decides to run up the thorn mountain as more thorns pop up. He has Pikachu use Thunderbolt to destroy them. Misty and Brock also climb up the thorns. As Ash reaches Larvitar, more thorns surround it and Ash is thrown back.

The thorns disappear from Larvitar and reveal it frozen in ice. Ash touches it and realizes that it is cold. He beats on the ice, telling it to think of the good times they had, the happy times, and the fun. Misty chimes in that they’ll have more fun and Brock shouts that not all humans are bad and to give them a chance. Ash begins punching the ice, with Pikachu shocking it. After a long time, the ice cracks and Ash breaks it completely. Ash grabs Larvitar and they find themselves outside the egg in the mind world. The thorn disappears from the egg as it begins to glow. The light engulfs everyone and they appear back in the real world.

Unown floats happily around as Misty and Brock talk to Larvitar. This time, Larvitar doesn’t Harden, but instead laughs. Misty shakes Larvitar’s hand a Ash thanks Unown as the purple portal to the Unown dimension appears again. Unown floats back into it; Ash and friends head onward toward Mt. Silver to deliver Larvitar and compete in the Johto League Silver Conference.
