Our heroes arrive in Vermillion City and Ash challenges the gym leader, Lt. Surge for the first time. Lt. Surge uses a Raichu and Ash's Pikachu loses and gets hurt. At the Pokémon Center, Nurse Joy offers them a Thunder Stone but Pikachu declines. Brock then comes up with an idea and Ash faces Lt. Surge again. Ash commands Pikachu to use its Speed attacks and they eventually win. Ash then gets his Thunder Badge.
